Mount Meru is a stunning, lesser-known gem located just outside Arusha, Tanzania. It stands at 4,566 meters (14,980 feet) and is the second-highest peak in Tanzania, after Mount Kilimanjaro. Although it’s a challenging climb, Mount Meru is often considered an excellent preparation for climbing Kilimanjaro. The climb is not only a physical challenge but also a chance to experience the diverse wildlife and stunning scenery of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Arusha National Park. This 4-day itinerary gives you a great mix of adventure, wildlife sightings, and breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes.

Morning: After an early breakfast in Arusha, you’ll be picked up from your hotel and transferred to Momella Gate, the starting point for the climb (about 1 hour from Arusha).

Start the Trek: At Momella Gate, you’ll meet your guide, porters, and crew, and after completing the necessary formalities, you’ll start your hike. The trek today takes you through Arusha National Park with its lush, diverse vegetation.
- You’ll be walking through dense rainforest where you may spot blue monkeys, colobus monkeys, antelope, and many species of birds. The trail is relatively moderate, with gradual ascents and incredible views of the surrounding landscapes.

Hike to Miriakamba Hut: The hike takes approximately 4-5 hours (10 km) to reach Miriakamba Hut (2,514 meters), the first resting point. The hut offers great views of the mountain and the surrounding area.

Dinner and Overnight: After arriving at Miriakamba Hut, you’ll enjoy a warm meal and spend the night in the comfortable hut, surrounded by nature.

Morning: After breakfast, you’ll continue your ascent toward Saddle Hut, located at 3,570 meters. This section of the climb is steeper, but still manageable, as you ascend through mountain heath and enjoy the spectacular views.

Trek to Saddle Hut: The hike today will take approximately 4-5 hours. As you make your way up, you’ll be able to see the Meru Crater and the incredible volcanic landscapes, with vast panoramas of the surrounding valleys.

Arrive at Saddle Hut: Once you arrive at Saddle Hut, you’ll have the afternoon to relax and acclimatize to the higher altitude. The hut offers panoramic views of the crater, and it’s the perfect place to rest before the final summit push.

Optional Acclimatization Hike: If you’re feeling good and want to aid in acclimatization, you can take a short hike to Little Meru (3,820 meters) for a great view of the summit and the surrounding areas.

Dinner and Overnight: Enjoy a warm dinner at Saddle Hut and prepare for an early start tomorrow to summit the peak.

Early Start: You’ll wake up early (around 1:30 AM) to begin your summit push. After a light snack and some warm drinks, you’ll start your hike toward Uhuru Peak (4,566 meters), the highest point of Mount Meru.

Summit Push: The trek to the summit takes approximately 5-6 hours and involves steep, rocky terrain. The path takes you through the ash cone, a volcanic area with challenging terrain but spectacular views of the surrounding landscape. You’ll also get glimpses of the Meru Crater below.
- The ascent is difficult due to the altitude, but the reward is worth the effort. As you reach the summit, you’ll be greeted with stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro to the north, as well as breathtaking views of the Meru Crater.

Summit Celebration: After reaching Uhuru Peak, take some time to celebrate your accomplishment, enjoy the incredible panoramic views, and take photos.

Return to Saddle Hut: After spending some time at the summit, you’ll begin your descent back to Saddle Hut for lunch. The descent takes approximately 3 hours.

Dinner and Overnight: After a long day, you’ll return to Saddle Hut for rest, dinner, and a well-deserved sleep.

Morning Descent: After breakfast, begin your descent back to Momella Gate. The trek down will take around 4-5 hours, and you’ll pass through the mountain heath zone and rainforest, which may offer glimpses of wildlife such as giraffes, warthogs, and various bird species.

Arrive at Momella Gate: Upon reaching Momella Gate, your vehicle will be waiting to take you back to Arusha. Depending on your schedule, you can either head directly to the airport for your flight or spend another night in Arusha before departing.
