Day trips, climbs and safaris from Moshi

Moshi is the base for most Kilimanjaro climbs. Here is what you can do from here, before or after your trek.

Mount Kilimanjaro rising above open plains near Moshi

Moshi sits at the foot of Kilimanjaro, about an hour from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). Many travellers spend a night or two here before a climb, and a rest day afterwards. We can arrange transfers from the airport and between Moshi and Arusha hotels, and we confirm the details in your proposal.

Things to do around Moshi

  • Materuni waterfalls and a coffee tour: a walk through Chagga farmland to a waterfall, followed by coffee roasting and tasting. See the Materuni tour on this page when it is listed.
  • A rest day after your climb: a slow morning, a shower and a good meal. Your legs will thank you.
  • Moshi town: the market and the cafés, with views of the mountain on clear mornings.

Climbs that start from Moshi

The Marangu, Machame and other routes all begin from gates within a short drive of Moshi. Compare them in our route guide, and see full-moon climb dates if you would like a moonlit summit night.

Safaris from Moshi

Moshi is about three hours from Arusha, and the Tarangire and Ngorongoro route is easy to start from here. A common plan is a Kilimanjaro climb followed by a short safari. Tell us your dates and we will suggest how to link them.
