Most first safaris in Tanzania follow the northern circuit, which starts at Arusha. The main parks are close enough to combine in a trip of 3 to 8 days. Here is how they compare.
Serengeti National Park: big skies and big cats
The Serengeti is Tanzania's most famous park, with endless plains, rocky outcrops called kopjes and large numbers of lions, leopards, cheetahs and herbivores. It is also the heart of the Great Migration. Because it is so large, it is best explored over at least two nights, and ideally more. See our month-by-month migration guide when planning dates.
Ngorongoro Crater: wildlife density in a bowl
A caldera with a dense population of animals, and one of the few places where you may see black rhino. A single day in the crater is enough for most people. It works well before or after the Serengeti.
Tarangire: elephants and baobabs
Tarangire is known for its large elephant herds and its baobab trees. It is at its best in the dry season (about June to October), when animals gather along the Tarangire River. It is less crowded than the Serengeti and a pleasant first stop from Arusha.
Lake Manyara: a compact park with variety
A small park between the Rift Valley escarpment and the lake. Its groundwater forest, hippo pools and birdlife make a good contrast to the open plains. The park is known for its tree-climbing lions, although they are not seen every day. It suits a short stop on a longer route.
Which combination?
- 3 days: Tarangire, Ngorongoro and Manyara, a short introduction.
- 4 days: Serengeti and Ngorongoro, or Manyara, Serengeti and Ngorongoro.
- 5 to 6 days: Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro, with more time on the plains.
- 7 to 8 days: add extra nights in the Serengeti to follow the herds, or add culture visits.
Private or shared?
Private safaris give you control of the pace and the day plan. Group departures are a way to share costs. Ask what vehicle type will be used, how many people are in it and whether everyone gets a window seat.
Beyond the north
Southern parks such as Nyerere and Ruaha are quieter and more remote, and they suit travellers who have time and want fewer vehicles. We are happy to talk about options.
