Camping, tented camps or lodges, on safari, on Kilimanjaro and on Zanzibar. Here is what each option feels like, so you can choose the comfort level that suits you.
Your accommodation shapes both your comfort and your wildlife time. Sleeping inside a park, or close to its gate,
puts you on the game tracks at sunrise, when many animals are most active, and saves hours of driving. Most of our
itineraries can be arranged at more than one comfort level, and the exact properties depend on your dates and on
availability. We confirm them in your written proposal.
Three comfort levels, park by park
Typical accommodation by area and comfort level
Area

En-suite tents or cottages, often with a pool and Rift Valley views
Treetop or riverside suites, or large tented lodges with their own pools
Ngorongoro and Karatu
A public campsite on the crater rim (cold, with early crater access)
Farm-style lodges around Karatu with gardens and fires in the evening
Lodges on the crater rim with views into the caldera
Central Serengeti
A public campsite inside the park, with your crew on site
Canvas camps with en-suite bathrooms and solar lighting
Luxury tented lodges with decks and swimming pools
Northern Serengeti and Ndutu (seasonal)
Seasonal mobile camping that follows the herds
Seasonal camps placed near the river or the southern plains
Small, high-end mobile camps in prime wildlife areas
Zanzibar
Simple guesthouses in Stone Town, beach bungalows in Paje or Nungwi
Heritage hotels in Stone Town, comfortable oceanfront resorts in Nungwi and Kendwa
Villas with private pools and all-inclusive beach resorts
These are the types of places we use in each area. We name the exact camps and lodges in your proposal.
What camping on safari is like
Public campsites sit inside the national parks, for example on the Ngorongoro Crater rim and in the central
Serengeti. Your crew sets up your tents and cooks hot meals. Facilities are basic and nights can be cold, but you wake
up inside the park, with wildlife close by.
Tented camps and lodges
A step up in comfort: a real bed, your own bathroom, hot water and a restaurant. Tented camps put you close to the
sounds of the bush, while lodges tend to have more facilities. Both are good for families and for travellers who want
comfort without a high price tag.
Tents at a camp above the clouds on Kilimanjaro. On the mountain you sleep in tents on most routes, and in huts on the Marangu route.
On Kilimanjaro
Most routes use tents at designated campsites, with a dining tent and a cook. The Marangu route has huts with shared
bunks. Whichever you choose, your tour page lists the sleeping arrangements and what is carried for you.
On Zanzibar
The north coast (Nungwi and Kendwa) is lively and good for swimming at most tides, while the east coast (Paje and
Jambiani) has wide, shallow lagoons and a quieter feel. Our Zanzibar guide
explains the tides and the seasons.
How we choose
Location first: each night should bring you closer to the next day's wildlife, not back along the road.
Then comfort level, season (some camps are seasonal) and your budget.
You will see the names of the properties, and what is included, before you pay.
