Safari Land Cruisers at a tented camp in the Serengeti

Traveller question

How much does a Tanzania safari cost?

What drives the price of a Tanzania safari: park fees, vehicle, lodging level and group size. Ask for a quote with everything itemised.

The short answer

What you need to know

A Tanzania safari price is mostly a handful of lines: park fees per person per day, the vehicle and guide, where you sleep, and how many people share the vehicle. Park fees are set by the parks and change, which is why we do not print a single number here.

The two choices that move the price most are the lodging level (camp, mid-range lodge, luxury) and whether you travel privately or share a vehicle. Length matters too: the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater cost more per day than a short trip to Tarangire.

Ask every operator for the price in writing with park fees, transfers, meals and drinks shown separately. Then you can compare like with like.

Checklist

What to weigh

  • Park fees

Charged per person per day, they change over time and are usually the biggest fixed cost. Ask whether they are included.

  • Lodging level

Basic camp, mid-range lodge or luxury camp: this is the biggest lever you control.

  • Private or shared vehicle

A private vehicle costs more per person for a couple than a shared one. It also gives you control of the day.

  • What is excluded

International flights, visas, tips and travel insurance are normally separate. Check the exclusions list line by line.
