The Mandara Hut sign at 2,720 metres on the Marangu route, Kilimanjaro

Traveller question

Which Kilimanjaro route is best?

Compare Kilimanjaro routes: Lemosho, Machame, Marangu, Rongai and the Northern Circuit. Length, scenery, crowds and acclimatisation.

The short answer

What you need to know

Longer routes give your body more time to adjust, which is the main thing that helps on summit night. Lemosho and the Northern Circuit are longer; Machame is shorter and popular; Marangu uses huts; Rongai approaches from the north and is drier.

The best route is the one that fits your time, budget and fitness. Tell us your days and experience and we recommend one, and say plainly if a shorter option is a poor fit.

Checklist

What to weigh

  • More days, more time to adjust

Extra days at altitude help most people. Avoid the shortest itinerary if you can.

  • Scenery and crowds

Western approaches are scenic; the busiest routes are crowded at peak times.

  • Huts or tents

Marangu sleeps in huts; the others camp. Think about comfort and cost.

  • Summit night

It is cold, steep and long. Preparation and pace matter more than speed.
