Safari Land Cruisers at a tented camp in the Serengeti

Traveller question

First safari in Tanzania: what should I know?

Practical first-safari advice: how many days, which parks, what to pack, health and how to avoid safari fatigue.

The short answer

What you need to know

For a first trip, the northern circuit (Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Serengeti and Ngorongoro) is a classic. Give the Serengeti at least a couple of nights; a rushed itinerary is the quickest way to feel tired of driving.

Pack light, neutral layers, a hat, sun protection and good binoculars. Early mornings are cool and the middle of the day is hot.

Checklist

What to weigh

  • Don't over-pack the schedule

Fewer parks, more time in each, makes a better trip.

  • Health

See a travel clinic about vaccines and malaria prevention well before you go.

  • Packing

Soft bag, layers, closed shoes, and a power adapter.

  • Binoculars and camera

A pair of binoculars improves every sighting.
