Tour Overview

The 6-Day Marangu Route (the "Coca-Cola Route") is the oldest and only trail on Mount Kilimanjaro offering dormitory-style A-frame sleeping huts instead of camping tents. Opting for the 6-day profile includes a crucial acclimatization day at Horombo Hut, elevating summit success substantially.

What the six days look like

You start at Marangu Gate (1,870 m) and walk through rainforest to Mandara Hut (2,720 m), then climb out of the forest into heather moorland to Horombo Hut (3,720 m). Day 3 is a rest-and-acclimatise day at Horombo, with an optional morning hike towards Zebra Rocks (4,020 m) or the base of Mawenzi. On day 4 you cross the alpine desert saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo to Kibo Hut (4,703 m).

Summit night starts around midnight: a steep climb on volcanic scree to Gilman's Point (5,681 m) on the crater rim, then on to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m). You return to Horombo Hut the same day, and walk down to Marangu Gate on day 6 to collect your certificate and transfer to Moshi.

You sleep in dormitory-style huts, not tents. The extra night at Horombo gives your body more time to adjust than the 5-day version of this route. Ask us about huts, meals and what is included before you book.

Apex Elevation 5,895 m (19,341 ft)
Trek Pacing "Pole, Pole" (Slow & Steady)

Daily walking times range from 4 to 7 hours across distinct biomes (rainforest, heath, alpine desert, and arctic summit scree). Elevation gains are strategically calculated to give your body adequate time to produce oxygen-carrying red blood cells naturally.
